1. Introduction

Journal of Oeconomia Syariah et Civitas is committed to ensuring integrity, transparency, and objectivity in the publication of scholarly research in Islamic economics, sharia finance, and civic studies. A conflict of interest (COI) arises when personal, financial, institutional, or ideological relationships may influence—or appear to influence—the research process, peer review, editorial decision-making, or publication outcomes.

2. Types of Conflict of Interest

Conflicts of interest may include, but are not limited to:

2.1 Financial Conflicts

  • Employment, consultancy, or advisory roles

  • Honoraria, grants, or research funding

  • Stock ownership, shares, or other financial interests

  • Patents, intellectual property rights, or commercial affiliations

2.2 Non-Financial Conflicts

  • Personal or family relationships

  • Academic competition or rivalry

  • Institutional affiliations or governance roles

  • Political, ideological, or religious views that may affect objectivity

3. Author Responsibilities

  • Authors must disclose all potential conflicts of interest at the time of manuscript submission.

  • Disclosure includes financial and non-financial interests that could influence the interpretation of findings.

  • If no conflict exists, authors must clearly state:
“The authors declare no conflict of interest.”

  • Failure to disclose conflicts may result in rejection, correction, or retraction of the published article.

4. Reviewer Responsibilities

  • Reviewers must declare any potential conflicts of interest before accepting a manuscript for review.

  • Reviewers should decline review assignments if:

    • They have a personal, professional, or institutional relationship with the authors

    • They have competing research or financial interests

  • All information obtained through peer review must remain confidential.

5. Editor Responsibilities

  • Editors must avoid handling manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest.

  • If a conflict exists, editorial responsibility must be transferred to another qualified editor.

  • Editorial decisions must be based solely on scholarly merit, relevance, originality, and ethical compliance, including adherence to principles of Islamic economics where applicable.

6. Management of Conflicts

  • Disclosed conflicts are reviewed by the Editor-in-Chief.

  • Actions may include:

    • Disclosure of conflicts in the published article

    • Reassignment of editors or reviewers

    • Rejection of manuscripts if conflicts compromise objectivity

7. Transparency in Publication

  • All relevant conflicts of interest are clearly stated in the published article.

  • Disclosure statements are accessible to readers to ensure transparency and trust.

This policy adheres to:

  • Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines

  • International standards of research integrity

  • Ethical principles and values of Islamic scholarship
