Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of cross-cultural communication in fostering social integration and to identify communication challenges emerging within multicultural communities. The research employed a qualitative method using a case study design because this approach provides an in-depth understanding of communication experiences, identity negotiation, and social adaptation processes within culturally diverse societies. The study was conducted in a multicultural urban community in Jakarta, Indonesia, selected due to its high level of ethnic, religious, linguistic, and cultural diversity. The research involved twelve informants consisting of community leaders, educators, social activists, youth representatives, and local residents who were purposively selected based on their active involvement and experiences in intercultural interaction. The findings reveal that communication barriers emerged from linguistic differences, cultural stereotypes, and social identity sensitivity. Nevertheless, participatory communication, communication accommodation, and inclusive dialogue significantly contributed to strengthening social cohesion and community integration. The study recommends enhancing multicultural education, community-based intercultural dialogue, and inclusive communication strategies to support sustainable social harmony in multicultural societies.
