Silent Symbols: The Role of Emoji and Visual Language in Cross-Cultural Digital Communication

Abstract

This study examines the role of emoji and visual language in cross-cultural digital communication, as reflected in the title Silent Symbols: The Role of Emoji and Visual Language in Cross-Cultural Digital Communication. The research aims to analyze how emojis function as visual communicative signs, how they are interpreted across different cultural contexts, and how they influence meaning, relational tone, and the potential for misunderstanding in online interaction. This study employs a qualitative method with an interpretive case study design, chosen because it enables an in-depth exploration of meaning-making processes within real digital communication settings. The research was conducted in digitally mediated intercultural environments involving participants located in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and Bandung, Indonesia, as these urban contexts provide active engagement with global communication platforms. Ten informants were selected purposively because they had direct experience in cross-cultural digital interaction and regularly used emojis in academic, professional, or social communication. The findings reveal that emojis function as semiotic, relational, and culturally mediated symbols whose meanings are context-dependent rather than universal. The study recommends strengthening intercultural digital literacy and expanding future research across broader platforms, languages, and transnational communication settings.
