The Role of Islamic Broadcasting Communication in Strengthening Religious Literacy among Youth
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study examines the role of Islamic broadcasting communication in strengthening religious literacy among the younger generation. The research aims to analyze how communication strategies, symbolic role modeling, and contextual message framing within Islamic broadcasting contribute to the development of reflective and critical religious understanding among young audiences. A qualitative research approach was employed using a descriptive–interpretive case study design, as this design allows for an in-depth exploration of meanings, experiences, and communicative practices that shape religious literacy. The study was conducted in an urban media environment in Indonesia, selected due to its active Islamic broadcasting institutions and high level of youth media engagement. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and document analysis involving nineteen informants, consisting of Islamic broadcasting practitioners, religious communicators, and young audience members. Informants were purposively selected to ensure rich and relevant insights into both the production and reception of Islamic broadcast content. The findings indicate that Islamic broadcasting communication can effectively strengthen religious literacy when it aligns with youth media needs, presents credible role models, and emphasizes contextual and interpretive religious understanding. However, one-way communication and rigid preaching styles limit its potential impact. The study recommends that Islamic broadcasters adopt audience-centered, dialogical, and literacy-oriented communication strategies to enhance the educational and cultural relevance of religious broadcasting for younger generations.
