Digital Transformation in Islamic Education: Challenges and Opportunities for Muhammadiyah-Based Learning Institutions
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study examines the challenges and opportunities of digital transformation in Muhammadiyah-based learning institutions within the broader context of Islamic education. The research aims to analyze how Muhammadiyah educational institutions adapt to technological change while maintaining Islamic educational values, organizational identity, and ethical learning practices. The study employed a qualitative approach using a case study design because this method enables in-depth exploration of institutional experiences, educational transformation, and sociocultural adaptation processes. The research was conducted in Muhammadiyah educational institutions located in Yogyakarta and West Java, Indonesia, selected due to their active implementation of digital learning systems and institutional modernization initiatives. The study involved fifteen informants consisting of institutional leaders, teachers, digital technology coordinators, and students, chosen purposively based on their direct involvement in digital educational practices. The findings reveal that digital transformation enhances educational accessibility, institutional efficiency, and collaborative learning opportunities; however, challenges related to digital literacy, technological infrastructure, ethical concerns, and organizational adaptation remain significant. The study recommends strengthening digital literacy programs, integrating Islamic ethical values into digital learning environments, and developing sustainable hybrid educational models to support adaptive and value-oriented Islamic education in the digital era.
